The Yemeni Initiative for Peace and Development held a consultative meeting today, Sunday, August 16, 2026, via videoconference with H.E. Mr. Patrick Simonnet, Ambassador of the European Union to Yemen, and the accompanying delegation from the EU Delegation. The meeting was held as part of the Initiative’s efforts to broaden dialogue with international partners on opportunities to promote peace, stability, and development in Yemen.
The Initiative’s delegation was headed by Secretary-General Nooh Al-Jaseri and included Dr. Mousa Qassem, Deputy Secretary-General; Dr. Adel Al-Shujaa, Head of the National Reconciliation Department; Dr. Mohammed Al-Maliki, Head of the National Reconciliation and Confidence-Building Project; Dr. Mohammed Al-Salahi of the International Relations and Partnerships Department; Ms. Ahed Yassin Al-Tamimi, Head of the Research and Studies Department; Ms. Amal Abdullah, Head of the Media and Communications Department; Ms. Donia Al-Khawlani of the Projects and Planning Department; and Ms. Shatha Muharram of the Coordination and Follow-up Unit.
The meeting addressed recent developments in Yemen’s political process, the role of civil society organizations and Yemeni civil initiatives in supporting peace efforts, and the importance of expanding the participation of women, youth, and civil actors in peacebuilding processes. Such participation can contribute to moving from conflict management toward addressing its root causes and creating the conditions for sustainable peace.
The Initiative presented its vision, which is based on linking peace with development, institution-building, and the strengthening of economic and social stability. It emphasized that Yemenis should retain a central role in defining the priorities of peace and the future of their country, while recognizing that civil society efforts should support and complement the UN-led process and the efforts of international partners.
The meeting also explored potential areas of cooperation between the Initiative and the EU Delegation to Yemen, including support for Yemeni dialogue, the exchange of expertise, and the preparation of policy papers and perspectives that could enrich discussions on the future of peace and development in Yemen. The participants also discussed following up on the outcomes of the International Conference on Peace and Development in Yemen, held in Salzburg in April 2026, including its tracks on national reconciliation, confidence-building, and economic recovery.
The Initiative stressed that peace efforts should not be limited to formal political processes, but require a broader base of participation that includes civil initiatives, local communities, youth, and women, thereby enhancing the prospects for reaching a comprehensive and sustainable Yemeni settlement.
For its part, the European Union Delegation highlighted the importance of continuing dialogue with Yemeni actors and expressed its support for efforts aimed at achieving peace and stability in Yemen.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to maintain communication and develop practical areas of cooperation and dialogue in support of peace and development in Yemen.
